Our story

About Cádiz Experience

Cádiz Experience is an independent, English-language travel guide to Cádiz, the Atlantic peninsula and port city on the southern coast of Spain. It exists for one job: to put the practical detail a visitor needs on one page — what a place is, when it opens, what it costs, and how it fits into a day on foot.

Why this site exists

Most English-language writing on Cádiz treats the city as a two-hour cruise-ship stop or a footnote to Seville: it tells you to climb the cathedral tower without mentioning that the Poniente bell tower and the 18th-century merchant watchtowers look over two different parts of the skyline, recommends "fried fish" without naming a single freiduría where the adobo is sold by weight in a paper cone, and sends visitors to the beach without explaining how an easterly levante wind changes where you want to swim.

Cádiz sits on a narrow limestone peninsula with 3,000 years of recorded history beneath its streets, from Phoenician Gadir and the Roman theatre of Balbus to the 1812 liberal constitution drafted under French siege at the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri. We built Cádiz Experience to give English-speaking travellers the specific, checked working knowledge that a serious visit deserves.

What we cover

Cádiz is a compact city, and our coverage stays focused on what helps you decide how to spend your time:

  • Monuments & museums: opening hours, ticket prices, free-entry windows and historical context across the city's monuments, castles, watchtowers and museums, alongside the chronology and historical figures that connect them.
  • Neighbourhoods & walks: street-by-street guides to the barrios — from medieval El Pópulo and flamenco-rooted Santa María to fishing-quarter La Viña, tree-lined El Mentidero and the Atlantic beach strip of Extramuros — plus self-guided walking routes.
  • Restaurants, bars & local dishes: where to eat in our reviewed restaurants, traditional tabernas and sherry bars, and a dish-by-dish guide to typical Cádiz food from tortillitas de camarones to wild almadraba red tuna.
  • Activities & seasonal events: Atlantic beaches, bay ferries, boat trips and activities, plus key dates on the Gaditano calendar including the February Carnival and seasonal events.
  • Practical trip planning: where to stay across our reviewed hotels, ranked guides, step-by-step itineraries, planning pages and in-depth articles.

How the guide is made

We work from official and primary sources: a venue's own website, the municipal and regional heritage bodies that run a site, museum catalogues and published transport timetables. Sources are cited on the pages that use them, so you can check a fact for yourself. Our editorial standards set out the research and verification process in full.

Prices, opening hours and booking rules change, sometimes without notice. Each page shows when it was last updated, but treat that date as a guide to freshness rather than a guarantee — confirm anything time-sensitive on the official venue site before you travel.

Independence

Cádiz Experience is not affiliated with any tourism authority, hotel group or tour operator, and nobody pays to be included. The site carries no affiliate links at present. If that changes, the affected pages will say so clearly.
