Cádiz is compact enough that you can walk from one end of the walled city to the other in twenty-five minutes, which makes arriving at a locked monument door all the more avoidable. Three different authorities manage the city's heritage sites (the Cathedral and Cádiz Sacra diocese, Cádiz City Council, and the Junta de Andalucía), and each sets its own Monday rules, afternoon breaks and seasonal changeover dates. All timetables on this page were checked against official municipal, diocesan and regional schedules on 1 November 2026.

The good news is that a Monday in Cádiz is far less restrictive than in many Spanish cities. While the Museo de Cádiz closes on Mondays (unless Monday is the eve of a public holiday), Cádiz Cathedral, Torre Tavira, the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, the Roman Theatre (except the first Monday of each month), Casa de Iberoamérica and the Museo de las Cortes all open their doors.

What Is Open on Mondays in Cádiz (And What Closes)

If your trip lands on a Monday, or if you are arriving on a Monday cruise call, you do not need to settle for walking past closed facades. Here is how to build a full Monday itinerary without hitting a single locked door:

  • 09:00–14:30: Mercado Central de Abastos & Museo de las Cortes. Unlike in many Spanish cities where fish stalls stay dark on Mondays, Cádiz's central market opens Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00. Just up Calle Sagasta, the Museo de las Cortes de Cádiz opens on Mondays from 09:00 to 14:30.
  • 09:30–16:00: Oratorio de San Felipe Neri. The 1812 constitutional parliament church opens on Mondays from 10:30 to 16:00 (last entry 15:30), and offers its pre-booked free slot via cadizsacra.es from 09:30 to 10:30.
  • 10:00–16:30/17:00: Roman Theatre & Casa de Iberoamérica. The Roman Theatre is open every Monday except the first Monday of the month, while Casa de Iberoamérica opens Monday mornings (10:00–14:00) and afternoons (17:00–20:00 in winter; 18:00–21:00 in summer).
  • All Day until Evening: Cádiz Cathedral, Torre Tavira & Castillo de Santa Catalina. All three stay open continuously through Monday afternoon. (Note only that the Cathedral's auxiliary museum, the Casa de la Contaduría, is closed on Mondays.)

What is closed on Mondays: Museo de Cádiz (unless Monday is the eve of an official public holiday, when it opens 09:00–15:00), the first Monday of the month at the Roman Theatre, Museo del Títere and Casa de la Contaduría.

“In Cádiz, Sunday afternoon after 15:00 is when museums lock their gates; save the Cathedral tower, Torre Tavira and Castillo de Santa Catalina for that late-afternoon window.”
— Cádiz Weekend Timing Rule
Sundays & Festivos

Sunday Afternoon & Public Holiday Closures

In practice, Sunday afternoon is trickier for indoor sightseeing in Cádiz than Monday. On Sundays:

Public holidays to watch: The Roman Theatre closes on 1 and 6 January, 1 May, 15 August, 1 and 2 November, and 6, 7, 8, 24, 25 and 31 December. The Museo de Cádiz closes on 1 and 6 January, 1 May, and 24, 25 and 31 December. Conversely, the Museo de las Cortes specifically opens from 09:30 to 14:00 on major regional and national holidays (28 February, 15 August, 12 October, 6 and 8 December).

Seasonal Changeovers

Summer vs Winter Timetable Shifts

Because afternoon heat changes pedestrian rhythm across Andalusia, several Cádiz venues push their afternoon reopening later in summer or extend their evening close:

  • 1 April / 1 October switch: The Roman Theatre shifts from 10:00–16:30 (1 October to 31 March) to 11:00–17:00 (1 April to 30 September). Castillo de Santa Catalina extends its daily close from 19:00 in winter to 19:30 between 1 April and 30 September.
  • 1 April / 1 November switch at Casa de Iberoamérica: Casa de Iberoamérica runs winter afternoon hours of 17:00–20:00 (1 November to 31 March) and shifts to 18:00–21:00 from 1 April to 31 October.
  • 1 May / 1 October switch: Torre Tavira runs 10:00–18:00 from October to April and extends to 10:00–20:00 from May to September, while Parque Genovés stays open until 22:30 in summer.
Markets & Dining

Mercado Central, Shop & Dining Hours

Outside the monuments, daily life in the Casco Antiguo follows a two-shift Andalusian timetable:

  • Mercado Central de Abastos: The traditional fish, meat and produce stalls trade Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00 (arrive between 09:30 and 11:30 for the full fish hall). Around the perimeter, the Rincón Gastronómico stalls let you buy dishes from any stall and sit at shared tables.
  • Independent shops (Calle Columela, Calle Ancha, Calle Novena): Typically open Monday to Friday 10:00–14:00 and 17:30–20:30, and Saturday mornings 10:00–14:00.
  • Freidurías, tapas bars and restaurants: Traditional fried-fish spots like Freiduría Las Flores I on Plaza de Topete serve split shifts daily from 11:30 to 16:30 and 19:30 to 23:30, while most sit-down restaurants open their kitchens around 13:00–16:00 for lunch and 20:00–23:30 for dinner (see our Cádiz food guide and best tapas bars in Cádiz).

Local correspondent notes

Local timing tips for Cádiz monuments and museums

Best time

Watch the first Monday of the month at the Roman Theatre

Unlike state museums that close every Monday, the Roman Theatre opens most Mondays from 10:00 (11:00 in summer). The exception is the first Monday of every month, when the enclave closes.

Crowd tip

Respect the 30-to-60-minute last-admission cutoffs

Published closing times in Cádiz are the hour the doors lock, not the last entry. Torre Tavira stops admitting visitors 60 minutes before close, while the Torre del Reloj and the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri close admission 30 minutes before close.

Local custom

Plan museums for the morning and seafront forts after 16:00

The Oratorio de San Felipe Neri and the Cathedral Museum shut by 16:00–16:30 on weekdays, and several museums close by 14:00–15:00 on Sundays. Save Castillo de Santa Catalina (open until 19:00 or 19:30 daily) and Parque Genovés for the late afternoon.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Cádiz Opening Hours

Are Cádiz monuments and museums closed on Mondays?

Only select state and municipal museums close on Mondays: the Museo de Cádiz and the permanent exhibition at the Museo del Títere are shut on Mondays, and the Roman Theatre closes on the first Monday of each month. By contrast, Cádiz Cathedral, Torre Tavira, the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, the Museo de las Cortes de Cádiz (09:00–14:30), Casa de Iberoamérica, Castillo de Santa Catalina and Mercado Central are all open on Mondays.

When do Cádiz monuments switch between summer and winter opening hours?

Different institutions switch on slightly different dates. The Roman Theatre and Castillo de Santa Catalina switch on 1 April (summer) and 1 October (winter), while Casa de Iberoamérica runs summer hours from 1 April to 31 October. Torre Tavira runs its extended 10:00–20:00 summer timetable from May to September and 10:00–18:00 from October to April.

What is open in Cádiz on Sunday afternoons?

Most museums and historic oratories close by 14:00 or 15:00 on Sundays (or stay closed all day). On Sunday afternoons after 15:00, your monument and garden options are Cádiz Cathedral and the Torre del Reloj (reopening 16:00–20:00 after Mass), Torre Tavira (open continuously until 18:00 in winter or 20:00 in summer), Castillo de Santa Catalina (open until 19:00 in winter or 19:30 in summer) and Parque Genovés.

What are the opening hours of the Mercado Central de Abastos?

The traditional fish, meat and fruit stalls at the Mercado Central open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00 and close on Sundays. Around the perimeter, the Rincón Gastronómico prepared-food stalls let you combine dishes from any counter at shared tables.

Which public holidays close almost every monument in Cádiz?

1 January, 6 January (Epiphany) and 25 December close virtually every monument and museum in the city, including Torre Tavira. In addition, the Museo de Cádiz and the Roman Theatre close on 1 May, 24 December and 31 December, and Casa de Iberoamérica closes on public holidays and from Maundy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
