Getting Around Cádiz: Walking, Urban Buses, Bay Ferries, Trains & Taxis

Getting around Cádiz splits cleanly along the historic ramparts of Puerta de Tierra. Inside the old walls, the city is flat, compact, and best explored entirely on foot: walking from the main railway station or ferry terminal at Plaza de Sevilla into the centre of the Old Town (around 1.5 kilometres) takes roughly 20 minutes, or 8 to 10 minutes by taxi.

Whenever you head south into Extramuros for the beaches of Santa María del Mar, Playa de la Victoria and Cortadura, or cross the water to neighbouring towns, all public transport is unified by the Consorcio Metropolitano de Transportes de la Bahía de Cádiz (CMTBC). A single rechargeable Consortium card works on ticket machines and validators across urban buses, the Line B-042 and B-065 Bay catamarans, Renfe Cercanías commuter rail (which stops at five stations inside Cádiz city alone), and the Trambahía tram-train.

On Foot

Walking the Old Town (Casco Antiguo)

Once you step inside the historic peninsula north of Puerta de Tierra, your feet are the fastest and most enjoyable mode of transport. The main train station, interurban bus stops, and maritime ferry terminal all cluster together around Plaza de Sevilla on the eastern harbour edge, just outside Plaza de San Juan de Dios.

From the railway or ferry terminal to central Old Town addresses such as Apartamentos GoodNight Cádiz is roughly 1.5 kilometres, taking about 20 minutes on foot across flat, pedestrian-friendly squares. Every major quarter inside the walls, from medieval El Pópulo and Santa María to La Viña and La Caleta on the western Atlantic tip, connects seamlessly via shaded lanes and sea-wall promenades like Alameda Apodaca and Parque Genovés. Consorcio Card & Buses

The CMTBC Transport Card & Cádiz Urban Buses

When you want to travel south of Puerta de Tierra to the beaches of Playa de Santa María del Mar, Playa de la Victoria and Cortadura, urban buses run along the main avenue and the Paseo Marítimo.

Rather than buying individual paper tickets for every ride, pick up the rechargeable transport card issued by the Consorcio Metropolitano de Transportes de la Bahía de Cádiz. The card is recognised by ticket machines and readers on buses, at Cercanías commuter stations, and at the Bay catamaran terminals:

  • Cádiz urban bus fare with the Consortium card (no transfer): €0.77 per journey.
  • Cádiz urban bus fare when transferring to or from an interurban mode: €0.27 per journey.
“For €1.18 with the Consortium transport card, the Line B-042 catamaran turns a 25-minute public commute across the Bay of Cádiz into one of the finest harbour cruises in southern Spain.”

Maritime Catamarans

Bay of Cádiz Catamaran Ferries: Line B-042 (El Puerto) & Line B-065 (Rota)

Operated by UTE Catamaranes Consorcio Bahía de Cádiz from the Terminal Marítima de Cádiz (next to the train station at Plaza de Sevilla, about 1.5 km from the central Old Town), two public passenger catamaran lines link the capital across the water:

  • Line B-042 (Cádiz to El Puerto de Santa María): Crosses the bay to El Puerto’s riverfront maritime station in barely 25 minutes. In the Consortium’s zone matrix this is a 4-jump (4 saltos) journey costing €2.90 for a single ticket or €1.18 with the Consortium transport card, making an El Puerto de Santa María day trip effortless.
  • Line B-065 (Cádiz to Rota): Crosses the outer Bay of Cádiz to Rota harbour. Counted as a 5-jump (5 saltos) trip, it costs €3.25 for a single ticket or €1.35 with the Consortium transport card.

Strict 5-minute ticket and 3-minute boarding cut-offs

Both catamaran lines are adapted for passengers with reduced mobility (PMR), and turnstiles enforce commuter punctuality: ticket sales close 5 minutes before departure and boarding gates close 3 minutes before sailing. When strong winds or sea swells force a suspension, the Consortium updates real-time status on its maritime portal and provides replacement buses whenever possible.

Rail & Tram-Train

Five Railway Stations Inside Cádiz, Cercanías C-1 & Trambahía

Many visitors do not realise that the municipality of Cádiz actually has five railway stations running down the spine of the peninsula, ending at the main Cádiz terminal station on Plaza de Sevilla. Because the rail line runs underground through Extramuros before emerging along the isthmus, commuter trains serve both regional excursions and quick hops between the Old Town and the southern beach districts.

From Cádiz main station, three rail services operate under the integrated bay and national network:

  • Renfe Cercanías (to Jerez de la Frontera): Links Cádiz’s city stations with San Fernando, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Santa María, and Jerez de la Frontera (including Jerez Airport). Ticket machines at Cercanías stations accept the CMTBC transport card.
  • Trambahía (Metropolitan Tram-Train): Connects Cádiz’s railway stations down the peninsula across San Fernando and out to Chiclana de la Frontera within the CMTBC network.
  • Media Distancia & Long-Distance Rail: Direct Media Distancia trains to Seville, Córdoba and Jaén, plus long-distance services. If you hold a long-distance Renfe AVE ticket, remember that you can obtain and use a free Combinado Cercanías ticket within the four hours prior to departure or four hours following arrival.
Cycling & Taxis

Cycling the Coastal Carril Bici & Taking Taxis

Riding the Perimeter Cycle Lanes

Because the peninsula is flat from end to end, cycling is one of the fastest ways to link the northern gardens of Alameda Apodaca and Parque Genovés with Playa de La Caleta, the Campo del Sur seawall below Cádiz Cathedral, and the long Atlantic promenade running from Playa de Santa María del Mar along Playa de la Victoria to Cortadura. You can ride the coastal perimeter on a guided Cádiz bike tour (2.5 to 3 hours, from €34 to €36) or hire a bike for the day.

Taxis for Station Transfers & Jerez Airport

Official taxis wait outside the train and bus stations at Plaza de Sevilla, by the maritime ferry terminal, at Plaza de San Juan de Dios, and along the main avenue outside Puerta de Tierra:

  • Train, bus or ferry station to central Old Town hotels: 8 to 10 minutes by taxi (compared with 20 minutes on foot).
  • Cádiz to Jerez de la Frontera Airport: Approximately 30 minutes by road and around €50 by taxi. See our getting to Cádiz from the airport guide to compare taxi and train times for your flight.

Local tips for getting around Cádiz and the Bay

Money tip

Pick up the rechargeable Consortium card for ferries and buses

The rechargeable transport card issued by the Consorcio Metropolitano de Transportes de la Bahía de Cádiz works across urban and interurban buses, Cercanías station ticket machines, and the Bay catamarans. It drops a Line B-042 El Puerto catamaran crossing from €2.90 to €1.18, a Line B-065 Rota crossing from €3.25 to €1.35, and Cádiz urban bus rides to €0.77 (€0.27 when transferring from an interurban mode).

Booking tip

Reach the catamaran terminal 10 minutes before sailing

At the Terminal Marítima de Cádiz next to Plaza de Sevilla, catamaran ticket sales close strictly 5 minutes before departure and boarding gates shut 3 minutes before the scheduled sailing time. Arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early, especially on sunny weekend mornings.

Best time

Check the live maritime status when the Levante wind blows

Strong winds or bay swells can temporarily halt Line B-042 and Line B-065 catamaran crossings. Check the real-time status page on the Consortium maritime portal before walking to the port; whenever sailings are suspended, the Consortium arranges replacement buses.

Money tip

Claim your free Combinado Cercanías with long-distance AVE tickets

If you connect to the province on a long-distance Renfe AVE train, your ticket includes a free Combinado Cercanías pass that can be obtained and used during the four hours before departure or the four hours after arrival.
