December in Cádiz trades Northern European frost for a 16.9 °C Atlantic afternoon, 166 hours of winter sunshine, and six weeks of Christmas lights across the historic peninsula. Nights are lively with festive flamenco (Navidad Flamenca), while daytime sightseeing requires careful planning around Spain's early-December Constitution holidays and the closures on 24, 25, and 31 December.

Christmas lights and Plaza de San Juan de Dios

Cádiz's extraordinary Christmas lighting runs continuously from 30 November to 6 January, illuminated every evening from 18:00 until midnight (00:00). Because sunset falls early in December, the lights transform the narrow limestone streets of the Casco Antiguo just as the evening paseo and tapas hours begin.

The civic anchor of the display is Plaza de San Juan de Dios, framed by the Neoclassical Ayuntamiento (Municipio), the Church of San Juan de Dios, and the Casa de los Pazos Miranda. For nativity scenes (belenes) and festive street traditions across the city, read our Christmas in Cádiz page.

Navidad Flamenca and the 2026 Falla centenary

Early December brings two headline evenings to the Gran Teatro Falla on Plaza Fragela:

  • 1 December 2026 (20:00) - Puro Cádiz (Navidad Flamenca): The theatre opens December with Puro Cádiz: Bienvenidos a la nueva experiencia de la Navidad Flamenca, bringing Cádiz's festive flamenco repertoire to the stage with singers May Fernández, Anabel Rivera, and Reyes Martín.
  • 7 December 2026 (20:00) - Manuel de Falla Hijo Predilecto Centenary: Writer and researcher Javier Osuna stages a historical fiction radio-theatre marking 100 years (1926–2026) since Cádiz-born composer Manuel de Falla was named Hijo Predilecto de la Ciudad de Cádiz.
“At six in the evening the Christmas arches light up across Plaza de San Juan de Dios, and the sound of December in Cádiz is flamenco villancicos drifting out of the tabernas.”

Holiday closures: 6–8, 24, 25 and 31 December

Spain's December calendar has two major holiday clusters: the early-December Constitution and Immaculate Conception bridge (Puente de Diciembre, 6 to 8 December) and the Christmas to Three Kings period (24 December to 6 January). Andalucía's official 2026 public holiday calendar designates Friday 25 December as the Natividad del Señor public holiday, followed by 1 January and Wednesday 6 January (Epifanía del Señor).

Monument opening rules split sharply between municipal sites, regional Junta de Andalucía museums, and private towers:

December and early January holiday opening status for major Cádiz monuments and museums
Monument / Museum 6 & 8 Dec 24 & 31 Dec 25 Dec 1 & 6 Jan
Torre Tavira Open 10:00–18:00 Open 10:00–18:00 Closed Closed
Casa de Iberoamérica Check local schedule Open 10:00–14:00 (23 Dec–6 Jan) 10:00–14:00 Christmas schedule 10:00–14:00 (to 6 Jan)
Museo de las Cortes Open 09:30–14:00 Check municipal notice Closed Closed
Museo de Cádiz Holiday morning hours Closed Closed Closed
Roman Theatre Closed (6, 7 & 8 Dec) Closed Closed Closed

Christmas Day (25 December) walking strategy

Because Torre Tavira, the Museo de Cádiz, and the Roman Theatre all close on 25 December, treat Christmas Day as an outdoor coastal day: walk the Cádiz seafront walk around Campo del Sur to La Caleta, stroll through Parque Genovés, and return at 18:00 for the Christmas lights.

Where to stay warm in the old town

In December, staying inside the pedestrianised Casco Antiguo puts you within a ten-minute walk of the Christmas lights, the Mercado Central de Abastos, and the sherry bars of La Viña. For a traditional winter base, Hotel Argantonio lights the fireplace in its main lounge throughout the winter months, turning the ground-floor salon into a warm gathering spot after an evening walk. For contemporary sea views over the Atlantic, Parador de Cádiz sits next to Parque Genovés and La Caleta.

Local correspondent tips

December planning notes from Cádiz

Booking tip

Use Torre Tavira and Casa de Iberoamérica on 24 and 31 December

Junta de Andalucía sites (Museo de Cádiz and the Roman Theatre) shut all day on both Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year’s Eve (31 December). Keep your sightseeing moving by booking Torre Tavira (open 10:00 to 18:00) or visiting Casa de Iberoamérica on its special 10:00 to 14:00 Christmas schedule.

Best time

Walk the Christmas lights between 18:00 and 20:30 before dinner

Cádiz illuminates its festive arches daily from 18:00 to midnight between 30 November and 6 January. Start at Plaza de San Juan de Dios outside the Ayuntamiento at 18:00 sharp, then follow the lit shopping streets toward Plaza de las Flores before the tapas bars fill up.

Room tip

Book an old-town hotel with a winter fireplace for damp evenings

December relative humidity averages 76% with overnight lows of 10.9 °C, which makes Atlantic evenings feel cooler than the thermometer suggests. Hotel Argantonio in the historic centre lights the fireplace in its main lounge throughout the winter months.
