The train in short
Renfe sells the Seville to Cádiz run as a Media Distancia service. It describes the trip as centre to centre, because both stations are in the middle of their cities. For distance, the Ayuntamiento de Cádiz gives 125 km from Cádiz to Seville by road.
Renfe's route pages do not publish a journey time, a fare or a full timetable, so this page does not either. Those three numbers change by train and date, and a figure copied here would age badly. Use Renfe's journey planner for the exact departure you want.
Stations at both ends
Sevilla Santa Justa
Santa Justa is Seville's main station and the one the Cádiz trains use according to Renfe. Renfe places it about ten minutes' walk from the city centre. It opens from 04:30 to 00:30 on weekdays other than public holidays, and from 05:15 to 00:30 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Cádiz station
Cádiz station is on Plaza de Sevilla. It handles Media Distancia and long-distance trains and connects with Cercanías line C1 and the TramBahía T1. The Ayuntamiento de Cádiz notes that the station is in the old part of the city, which is why the walk in is short.
Check the station hours
Renfe's Cádiz station page lists opening from 05:20 to 00:00, while its Seville to Cádiz route page gives 06:00 to 23:45. The two do not match, so treat the shorter window as the safe one and confirm on the day you travel, especially for a late return.
First trains and what to check
Renfe's route pages give one departure each way. The first train from Sevilla Santa Justa to Cádiz leaves at 06:40. The first train from Cádiz to Sevilla Santa Justa leaves at 05:40. Everything after those is in Renfe's planner.
- The last train back to Seville. Look it up before you commit to dinner in Cádiz.
- Weekend and holiday timetables, which can differ from weekdays.
- The journey time of the specific train you choose.
- Whether the planner offers a direct service or a connection for your date.
If the plan is a day trip, the 06:40 departure leaves room for a full day, but you do not need it. A mid-morning train still gives a long afternoon, provided the return is fixed first.
Tickets
Renfe advises buying early for the lowest prices and lists discounts for children, young people, seniors and large families. For Media Distancia, a return ticket bought together with the outward one saves 20%. Single tickets can be changed or cancelled, with a cancellation fee of 15%.
Renfe asks for the traveller's details, including a mobile number, when you buy a Media Distancia ticket, so have them ready for each person in the group. No fare is quoted on the route pages, so check the price for your date at booking.
From the station into the old town
You step out onto Plaza de Sevilla, at the port edge of the old town. The catamaran terminal and the Consorcio bus stop of the same name are around the square, so it doubles as the city's transport corner. Our cruise port day guide puts the station about 900 metres from the port terminal, which gives a sense of how compact the centre is.
From here the old town is on foot. A good first stretch is the cathedral quarter and El Pópulo, the oldest part of the city, with the cathedral as the landmark to aim for. Renfe lists a taxi rank and car park at the station for anyone with luggage or limited mobility, and says the station is accessible.
Planning the day
- Pick your return train first, and keep a margin before the last one.
- Buy outward and return together to get the 20% Media Distancia saving.
- Leave Seville early enough to reach Plaza de Sevilla by mid-morning.
- Spend the day inside the old town. The two-day itinerary has the order to walk it in.
- Be back at the station well before your departure, and recheck the platform on the board.
Season changes the day more than the train does. The best time to visit Cádiz guide covers weather and crowds by month.
