Vejer de la Frontera day trip from Cádiz: the bus, the white streets and the way back
Outdoors and travel writer covering Cádiz beaches, coastal walks and day trips.
Vejer is the day trip that punishes improvisation. The public transport option is a Consorcio bus from the Plaza de Sevilla, and the whole day hangs on two times: the bus you catch out and the one you catch back. Get those right and you have a white town on a hill, its walls and gates, and a lunch of local pork.
This page is about the single town. For how it compares with Jerez, El Puerto, Sanlúcar and Tarifa, see the day trips from Cádiz guide.

Getting there by bus
Vejer and Barbate joined the Consorcio de Transportes de la Bahía de Cádiz fare system on 6 October 2026, and the Consorcio lists line M-070 as Cádiz, Vejer and Barbate. Buses leave from the Plaza de Sevilla stop by the Cádiz station. The town stop you want is the one named Vejer de la Frontera; Hospital de la Janda comes before it on the route and is not the old town.
These are the departures in the timetables valid from 6 October 2026, with the arrival at the Vejer town stop:
- Weekdays: 9:00 (arrives 11:00, by El Palmar and Caños de Meca), 11:15 (12:50) and 13:00 (14:20).
- Weekends and holidays: 11:00 (arrives 12:30).
- Back to Cádiz on weekdays: leave Vejer at 12:45 (Cádiz 14:15), 15:45 (17:15) or 19:20 (20:50).
- Back at weekends: the 19:20 (Cádiz 20:50).
The 11:15 out and the 15:45 or 19:20 back make the usual day: about three hours on the ground with the first, nearly seven with the second. The Consorcio says departure times at the first stop are fixed and times further along depend on traffic, so leave a margin before the last bus.
Check before you go
The fare, the drive time by car and the return times of the 9:00 route through El Palmar were not confirmed at the time of writing, and timetables change with the season. Look all three up on the Consorcio site, and screenshot the return time at the stop.
If you are making other trips, the transport card gives free transfers between intercity buses, Cercanías and the catamaran, and the Consorcio puts the old town, La Barca, Hospital de la Janda and El Palmar in the same fare zone.
The hill town
Vejer sits on a hill 190 m above sea level, which is why it was fought over and why it looks the way it does. It was declared a historic-artistic site in 1976. The walls survive as a six-sided ring, and four medieval gates are recorded, among them the Puerta de la Segur, the Puerta de la Villa and the Puerta de Sancho IV. Walk the line of the walls first; it orients you faster than any map.
The church of El Divino Salvador
Stand outside the parish church and read its history in the stone. It has a Gothic-Mudéjar head from the 14th century and a late-Gothic extension of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and its bell tower rises on the old minaret of the mosque it replaced. Opening hours were not available from an official page at the time of writing, so ask at the tourist office or check the church door.
Viewpoints and the cobijada
The town's tourism office lists several miradores. The Mirador de la Corredera looks across fields to the Atlantic, and the Mirador del Castillo gives a panorama of the town and its surroundings. You will also meet the cobijada, the town's traditional costume, which has drawn the curiosity of European artists and writers since the last century and is listed among its living crafts.
Eating in Vejer
The town's signature is lomo en manteca, cured pork loin preserved in lard, which the town council calls part of Vejer's identity and celebrates with an annual day each autumn. Local butchers sell it and it was the star of the town's most recent lomo day. No single restaurant's hours or prices were confirmed at the time of writing, so none is named; ask at the tourist office or read the door.
Back in Cádiz, the coast's other famous product is almadraba tuna, and the atún de almadraba page explains how to order it.
El Palmar, trails and Turrell
El Palmar is Vejer's beach, about 10 km from the town. The tourism office describes it as good for surfers and for long walks along the shore. It does not combine well with the old town in one afternoon on a bus timetable, so choose one. For the city beaches you can reach on foot, see Cádiz beaches compared.
Walkers have eight marked routes from Vejer, including the Ruta Molinos de Viento, the Ruta del Abejaruco and the Ruta de las Marismas de Barbate. They suit a second visit more than a day trip.
One experience is worth planning a weekend around. The Montenmedio Contemporánea Foundation, on the N-340 near Vejer, offers a James Turrell light sequence on Saturdays and Sundays at sunset, subject to availability. The listed price is €30 per person with a minimum of four, and booking is essential. No bus to it was found at the time of writing, so treat it as a trip with a car or a taxi and confirm everything with the foundation.
Building the day
Work backwards from the bus home. Decide between the 15:45 and the 19:20, write it down, and then fill the hours between.
- Take the 11:15 from the Plaza de Sevilla (11:00 at weekends) and get off at the Vejer de la Frontera stop.
- Walk the walls and the gates, then the church and a viewpoint.
- Eat lunch in the old town, and try the lomo en manteca.
- Leave the late afternoon for the miradores if you take the 19:20, or head to the stop early for the 15:45.
- Be at the stop ten minutes before departure, not on time.
If the 19:20 is your bus, you arrive at the Cádiz station at 20:50, which is late enough that you should book dinner or know where is still serving. The day trips guide lists Cádiz tables that stay open for the last bus.
Questions about Vejer as a day trip
How do you get from Cádiz to Vejer de la Frontera without a car?
By Consorcio bus from the Plaza de Sevilla stop beside the Cádiz station. Since 6 October 2026 Vejer has been part of the Consorcio fare system, and the Consorcio lists line M-070 as Cádiz, Vejer and Barbate. On a weekday the 11:15 reaches the town stop at 12:50. There is no frequent service, so the day is built around fixed departures.
How long does the bus from Cádiz to Vejer take?
About one and a half hours on the 11:15 weekday bus (12:50 arrival) and about the same on the weekend 11:00 (12:30 arrival). The Consorcio fixes departure times at the first stop and says times further along depend on traffic, so treat the arrival as an estimate.
What is the last bus back from Vejer to Cádiz?
The Consorcio timetable valid from 6 October 2026 shows a bus leaving the Vejer town stop at 19:20 and reaching Plaza de Sevilla at 20:50, on weekdays and at weekends. Read the current timetable on the day, because it can change with the season.
Is Vejer de la Frontera worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a walkable white hill town more than a beach. It stands on a hill 190 m above sea level, was declared a historic-artistic site in 1976, and keeps its walls, four gates and a Gothic-Mudéjar church. If your plan is sand and swimming, Cádiz already has it.
Can I combine Vejer with a beach?
With planning. El Palmar beach belongs to Vejer and lies about 10 km from the town. A Consorcio line from Cádiz runs through El Palmar on weekdays at 09:00 and 17:15, and El Palmar is in the same fare zone as the town. The return times for that route were not available at the time of writing, so check them before you commit to a beach day.
How much is the bus to Vejer?
The fare was not available from an official page at the time of writing. The Consorcio has a fare simulator on its site, and the transport card gives a 40% discount on land modes through 31 December 2026, so price your trip there before you travel.
