Step through the Puerta de Tierra into Extramuros and the sheltered bay gives way to three Atlantic beaches in a line: Playa de Santa María del Mar, Playa de la Victoria and Playa de Cortadura.
Where the waves break in Cádiz city
| Beach | Dimensions | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Playa de Santa María del Mar (Playita de Las Mujeres) | 650 m × 50 m | Sheltered between two breakwaters (espigones); seabed builds surf waves during storm swells (días de temporal) |
| Playa de la Victoria | 2,800 m × 185 m (2.5–3.5 km) | Golden siliceous sand on a 6% slope, nearly 200 m wide at low tide (bajamar) |
| Playa de Cortadura | South of Victoria | Dune-backed beach with designated nautical sports zones |
Learners start at Playa de Santa María del Mar, accessed off Avenida Fernández Ladreda down a sloped embankment via three pedestrian routes from north to south: a curved ramp, central stairs and a straight ramp. The beach holds the European Blue Flag and UNE-EN-ISO-14.001 certification. South of it, Playa de la Victoria runs to Cortadura along the Playa Victoria to Cortadura Promenade Walk; see our guide to Cádiz's four city beaches for all four city beaches.
Schools, kit and municipal beach rules
Hopupu Surf Club has taught surf lessons and courses on Playa de Santa María del Mar since 1999 for all ages and levels year-round, alongside board hire and paddle surf (SUP) routes. Instructors are federated surf technicians and qualified lifeguards, led by a team with over 20 years of outdoor experience. Confirm session lengths and rates with the school; beginner (iniciación), intermediate (intermedio) and private lessons include:
- Softboards (tablas blandas) with rubber fins (quillas de goma) in multiple sizes.
- Full and shorty wetsuits (neoprenos) in all thicknesses, sanitised after each use.
- Changing rooms and lockers (vestuario y consignas).
Cádiz's beach regulations (normativa de playas) ban sports outside designated zones and hours; on Santa María del Mar, surfing is restricted to low season or outside bathing hours, and boat lanes are off-limits. Respect the green, yellow and red flags and avoid peak sun (14:00–18:00). In a rip current, swim parallel to the shore rather than against it, and call lifeguards (socorristas), police (091) or 112 in an emergency.
