Hotel Las Cortes de Cádiz, a 19th-century merchant palace hotel on pedestrian Calle San Francisco in the historic centre of Cádiz
traditional

An 1859 Indies merchant palace on Calle San Francisco, with a 19th-century watchtower suite and 360º rooftop terrace

Stay on Calle San Francisco in an 1859 Cádiz merchant palace where Hans Christian Andersen slept in 1862: 36 rooms, a watchtower duplex and a 360º rooftop bar.

An 1859 merchant house that was already a hotel by 1862

Hotel Las Cortes de Cádiz stands at Calle San Francisco 9, on a pedestrian street in the historic centre, inside a 19th-century Casa-Palacio de Cargadores a Indias built for the Marqués de la Cañada, a maritime merchant. Construction finished in 1859, the year still wrought into the iron entrance gate. Three years later, in 1862, the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen stayed here during his visit to Cádiz, when the house operated as La Fonda de París.

The layout follows the vertical hierarchy of a merchant palace of the Americas trade. The ground floor opens onto a central Andalusian patio where period dances were once held; the first floor housed the counting-house administration, the second belonged to the nobility, and the third quartered the household staff. Rising above the roof is a 19th-century watchtower (torre mirador) from which a lookout spotted cargoes arriving from the Americas as ships entered the Port of Cádiz. Today the property is Cádiz's first themed hotel, with 36 rooms (66 beds in total) arranged around traditional Andalusian courtyards and dedicated to figures of the 1812 Cortes or corners of the city, each represented inside by a painting.

Rooms, the Andersen terrace and the watchtower duplex

Every room has marble floors, air conditioning or heating, a private bathroom with shower or bath, a magnifying mirror, hairdryer, flat-screen TV, desk, telephone, safe, free Wi-Fi, an electric kettle, wake-up service and room service. None of the rooms has a stocked minibar, though each provides a small fridge so you can chill your own drinks and food. Sizes and daylight vary sharply by category, so choose with the floor plan in mind:

Room category Floor area Key layout detail
Doble Petit Interior 11 m² Quiet interior room; natural light and ventilation come only through a small non-opening transom window above the door
Doble 1812 Interior 13 m² Interior double facing the courtyard side
Doble con Balcón 13 m² Exterior double with a street-facing balcony
Doble o Triple Superior 15 m² Larger layout for two or three guests
Familiar Superior 25 m² Two communicating rooms with two independent bathrooms
Junior Suite Andersen 45 m² Top-floor suite beside the rooftop mirador, with a private terrace and panoramic views
Dúplex Torre Ulysses S. Grant 45 m² Two-storey suite linked by a spiral staircase inside the 19th-century watchtower

The two 45 m² rooms are the reason to book early. The Junior Suite Andersen sits on the top floor next to the rooftop terrace and honours the 1862 guest with its own private terrace. The Dúplex Torre Ulysses S. Grant, dedicated to the 18th US President who visited Cádiz in 1878, puts your bed inside the 19th-century watchtower itself, with a spiral staircase between its two levels and views over the city, the Port of Cádiz and the Cádiz Cathedral.

Mirador Las Cortes and practical logistics

On the fourth floor, Mirador Las Cortes operates as a 360º panoramic rooftop chill-out bar and solarium terrace serving wines and cocktails at sunset. From the parapet you can pick out the cathedral (known locally as la Bella Escondida), Torre Tavira, the port and the 1812 Constitution Bridge. Because smoking is banned in all bedrooms and indoor common areas, this fourth-floor open-air terrace is also the only place in the building where smoking is permitted. Downstairs, the hotel has a restaurant and cafeteria, plus a private interior meeting lounge for up to 10 people equipped with Wi-Fi and a projector screen.

Check-in begins at 14:00 and check-out is before 12:00, with free luggage storage if your train leaves later. Note that reception is not staffed 24 hours: the desk opens from 09:00 to 23:00 Sunday to Thursday, and from 09:00 to 00:00 on Friday and Saturday:

  • Partner parking is arranged at Calle Beato Diego de Cádiz 12, a one-minute walk (50 to 100 metres) from the hotel, for 20 EUR per day (IVA included); reserve through reception before arrival.
  • Pets are accepted at a supplement of 16.50 EUR per day (IVA included).
  • An elevator serves every floor and the common areas are step-free, though the hotel has no bedrooms specifically adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

Who it suits

The location on Calle San Francisco puts the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri and Plaza de las Flores a short stroll away, with the port and cathedral at five minutes' walk, Cádiz train station and the maritime terminal at seven minutes, and the Gran Teatro Falla or La Caleta beach within 15 minutes on foot. Compare it with Hotel Argantonio if you want a 24-hour front desk, or with this house if you want a watchtower duplex, pet-friendly policy and a 360º rooftop bar.

Insider tips

Room tip

Check the window setup before booking the 11 m² Petit Interior

The Doble Petit Interior is very quiet because it faces the interior of the house, but its only natural light and ventilation come through a small non-opening transom window above the door. If you want a street balcony, book the 13 m² Doble con Balcón; for a private terrace or watchtower views, pick the 45 m² Junior Suite Andersen or Dúplex Torre Ulysses S. Grant.

Booking tip

Reserve the Calle Beato Diego parking and watch the reception cutoff

Reception closes at 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday, so let the hotel know well ahead if your train or flight runs late. If you are driving, message reception in advance to hold a 20 EUR/day partner bay at Calle Beato Diego de Cádiz 12, one minute's walk from the pedestrian street.

Best time

Head to the fourth-floor Mirador Las Cortes for sunset

The 360º rooftop terrace bar on the fourth floor is timed for Gaditano sunsets over the Cathedral ('la Bella Escondida'), Torre Tavira, the port and the 1812 Bridge. If you book directly with the hotel, ask about the welcome drink included with direct reservations.
